Video: Holmes Lawyers Question Firearms Analysis

Wed, 2014-07-23 12:18
Defense attorneys in the Colorado theater shootings are attacking the reliability of firearms analysis, saying it's subjective and lacks statistics to measure its accuracy. The judge heard testimony Wednesday from a state crime scientist who said he matched bullets and shell casings found at the theater to three weapons, apparently the ones officers seized at the scene. James Holmes pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to charges of killing 12 people and injuring 70 in the 2012 attack.

Video: JPMorgan Begins To Provide Consumer Help Under $13 Billion Settlement

Tue, 2014-07-22 04:56
A monitor of the deal said in a report released on Tuesday that JPMorgan Chase & Co has begun to provide the debt forgiveness and other help to struggling homeowners under last year's $13 billion accord with federal and state authorities, though it has only turned over a handful of details. Joseph Smith, who was appointed by the bank and governments to monitor a settlement over mortgage securities, said he determined that the largest U.S. bank had so far earned $6.3 million in so-called "credits" from either cutting borrowers' principal or agreeing to defer some payments on 100 loans in a test pool. The bank receives extra credit for certain types of help and less for others, so the total is not a dollar-for-dollar accounting of the assistance provided. In an interview, Smith said he didn't yet have enough information to assess whether the bank is on track to fulfill its obligations, which it has until 2017 to accomplish, but he expected to put a more comprehensive report out later this year.

Following concerns raised by consumer groups in a number of European countries, the EU executive called in industry members, policymakers and consumer protection authorities to discuss clearer guidelines in February.

An Italian appeals court on Friday overturned Silvio Berlusconi's conviction on charges of abuse of office and paying for sex with a minor, in a significant legal victory for the former prime minister. The Milan court unexpectedly threw out the guilty verdict handed down by a lower tribunal last year, which had sentenced Berlusconi to seven years in jail. Berlusconi was accused of paying for sex with former nightclub dancer Kharima El Mahroug, better known under her stage name "Ruby the Heartstealer", when she was under 18, and of abusing his authority to get her released from police custody over unrelated theft accusations.

Video: Victims’ reaction to Roswell school shooter sentencing

Thu, 2014-07-03 00:03
The victims now have some relief as they try to move forward. The judge handed down the sentence they wanted, but emotions ran high all day. Reliving that pain helped them come to peace. They got the judge on their side and now they say they know Mason will get the help he needs. This -- as they still figure out what kind of treatment they'll need for the rest of their lives. We all know a mother and father's love runs deep. "I felt such extreme helpless pain, my precious baby covered in bandages. There was blood everywhere. So much blood," said Nathanial’s mother Donna Tavarez. The pain the Tavarez family felt in January, they remembered in detail this day. They did it to prove how hard it has been for them, how hard Nathaniel and Kendal’s lives will still be, forever, with lead shotgun pellets still poisoning their bodies. "She may never be able to have children of her own --- they may not be able to keep the lead poisoning passing along to a baby," said Kendal’s mother Nickie Portio. Still, through sharing that pain these families find solace. "He's just a really good kid that made a bad decision," Kendal Sanders said. Kendal found forgiveness for Mason Campbell. Nathaniel may too, with the help of God. "It's gonna take some time for you. It's gonna take a lot of time," said Nathaniel Tavarez In time, these families know their lives will improve, and so will Mason's. "He's a young child, and I think with a lot of the counseling that's he's going to receive, he'll be OK in the long run," said Alfred Tavarez.
