Video: 4OYS: Is your contractor lying to you?
she learned the hard way. a bogus contractor messed up her family's home. he didn't get the job done, but ran off with their money anyway. so, they turned to 4 on your side investigator ryan luby to tell their story, and to make sure this doesn't happen to you. ryan? yes, on the surface, the family says the man seemed legit. he has a business card. he has this slick website -- gibson light maintenance and home repair. but -- fact is -- he's not licensed, and they say he left them with double the trouble. Cece: "there you go" Luby: "lo at that." Cece: "yep." Luby: " my god.") there's an old saying you get what you pay for. near eubank and central in albuquerque, cece miller and her husband have been living in a construction zone for weeks all because of a tiling job that went bad. cece wanted those tiles on her home's entire second floor. ya see, she had to get rid of the carpet because it was trapping germs and dust that caused her allergies to flare up in miserable ways. so, to try to find a good deal, she went on craigslist asking for someone to help. lo and behold, the man who responded has that slick website. he stopped by cece's home, offered a quote of 22-hundred dollars, had her put 11-hundreds dollars down, then went to work. first problem -- he didn't put down a backer board on the subfloor. that's why those tiles just wouldn't stick. second problem -- he cashed that 11-hundred dollar check for supplies, but only spent a little more than half of it. so where's the rest? we tried to find him at home. we tried to get him on the phone-- , Uh hi greg--") --but just like cece, we learned he's seemingly off the grid. so, for now, cece's left with the mess-- --but she offers advice to anyone thinking about soliciting for too good of a deal. cece and her husband found other people to do the work, and they had to take out a loan to pay them. if you're wondering if your contractor is legit, you can can do a "do-it-yourself" investigation by looking them up on the state's website. we have links for that on our website, kob dot-com.

Video: Cities Where Real Estate Is Ripe For A Rebound
The folks at Local Market Monitor, a Cary, N.C.-based real estate research firm, compiled a list of cities where real estate is ripe for a rebound. They sorted through a plethora of housing and economic data for the 100 most populous cities and their surrounding suburbs, defined as Metropolitan Statistical Areas and Metropolitan Divisions by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget. LMM assessed home prices over the past 12 months, unemployment rates, 12-month job growth projections, population increases and new-home construction rates. The results found that the best areas are San Jose, California, Houston, Texas, and Raleigh, North Carolina.

Video: Home safety tips for your home during a vacation
Going on vacation is an exciting time but law enforcement says you're not the only one who's anticipating the trip. - This is open season for thieves
Lieutenant Paul Szych with the Property Crimes Division says APD offers free on-site visits to check how well your home is protected--inside and out.
He showed KOB 4 the most common mistakes homeowners make before going on vacation.
A big one-- turning off outdoor lights.
“The sides of your home, the back yard and certainly right here on the porch,” he said.
Szych says homeowners may be trying to conserve energy but it's a dead giveaway that no one is home. He says a lot of crime prevention starts right in your front yard
“Shrubbery, make sure that its cut down and trimmed down so others can see your house,” he said, “Most people will not let newspapers pile up in the driveways, without picking them up.”
He says the most common place a thief will try is the front door.
Second a side window.
Then the back door, he says all doors should have metal frames.
And instead of boarding your furry friend have someone check on them *and* the house for you.
“Have them come by check on the pets, pick up the newspaper in the drive way, and bring your trash cans in from the street,” he said.
Overall he says the safest house is the house that looks like you never left.
When you are on vacation police cannot stress enough--avoid the urge to announce it on social media. They say thieves are searching for these kinds of status updates.
Albuquerque Police Department will also check on your home while you are gone.
Just call your local substation and ask for The "Crime Prevention Specialist Officer" they say they will check on your house as many times as possible.
