ClipSyndicate Law - Tue, 2014-07-01 06:49
To commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, the Arkansas Psychological Association and Mosaic Templars Cultural Center will hold an event to discuss the importance of psychologically healthy workplaces and honor two local civil rights advocates, political and social justice activist Mary Brown "Brownie" Williams Ledbetter, and psychologist and member of the Little Rock Nine, Dr. Terrence Roberts, from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 2, at Mosaic Templars. The free and public event is designed to raise the awareness of the effect of discrimination in the workplace on the groups named in the 1964 Civil Rights Act which was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson on July 2, 1964. A reception will follow. Ledbetter is being honored posthumously for her work through the Arkansas Public Policy Panel. She served as volunteer executive director until her retirement in 1999. Roberts is best known as being one of the nine students to desegregate Little Rock's Central High School, but as an adult, he became a psychologist and through his private practice he has counseled organizations on equitable practices in both industry and business including serving as a desegregation consultant to the Little Rock School District.

Video: NYC Cop's Cannibalism Chatter Online Not Enough For Conviction

ClipSyndicate Law - Tue, 2014-07-01 05:53
A federal judge has overturned the conviction of a former New York City police officer accused of plotting to kidnap, kill and eat young women, due to insufficient evidence. A jury had concluded that Gilberto Valle wasn't just fantasizing when he conversed online with others he had never met about killing and cooking his wife and others in a cannibalism plot. However, defense attorney Julia Gatto said Tuesday that Judge Paul Gardephe disagreed, and ruled late Monday that there was insufficient evidence to support the Valle's conviction.

Video: Audio recordings obtained from APD officers who shot and kil

ClipSyndicate Law - Thu, 2014-06-26 23:59
KOB Eyewitness News 4 has obtained the audio recordings of the interviews from both APD Officers who fired the fatal shots at mentally ill man James Boyd back in March. Officer Keith Sandy and Officer Dominique Perez were both questioned two days after the incident. They both describe seeing James Boyd standing at a higher point than officers in the foothills, shouting threats at police. They say Boyd had knives in his hands and it seemed he could easily lunge at officers. Officer Perez says the team had already deployed a flash bang, Taser shotgun, and a police dog and none of them had any effect on Boyd. Both officers then say they fired bullets, and Boyd fell after a few hits. "I felt that I had no other choice than to use deadly force. I did not think that the suspect was just going to stop there and stand there with his knives," Officer Perez said in the interview. Both Officers say after Boyd was injured on the ground, he continued to hold onto his knives. They say bean bag rounds were then fired after Boyd was shot.

A lawyer for General Motors Co. will announce on Monday the eligibility criteria for a program to compensate victims of a faulty ignition switch that prompted the recall of 2.6 million vehicles. According to a statement on Thursday by a spokeswoman for the lawyer, Kenneth Feinberg, among the details will be the scope and rules of the program and the timeline for submitting claims. She said he will make the announcement during a speech at the National Press Club in Washington on Monday morning. GM CEO Mary Barra said during a June 18 congressional hearing that Feinberg would have “full authority” to decide who would be eligible for the program and what each claim would be paid. She said the program is intended to compensate "every single person who suffered a physical injury or lost a loved one" as a result of the switch. She said the program would begin accepting claims by Aug. 1.

Video: Net Neutrality Shouldn’t Be Up To The FCC, Republicans Say

ClipSyndicate Law - Tue, 2014-06-24 03:58
House Republicans on Friday challenged the existing framework for how net neutrality rules are set and enforced. At a hearing held by the House Judiciary subcommittee on antitrust law, the Republican members said the Federal Trade Commission, not the Federal Communications Commission, should have authority when it comes to net neutrality. The Republicans’ call for a shift to the FTC is likely spurred by the FCC’s history of questionable commitment to net neutrality, with some criticizing the agency for backtracking on the issue in recent years. In May, Rep. Bob Latta introduced a bill that would “limit” the FCC’s ability to regulate the Internet.
