Video: 4OYS: Letters from prison
people. a prison inmate so frightening someone he was once close to is now terrified of him. the days are counting down until a new mexico man walks out of prison. for three years ... he's been writing letters... vowing vengeance. the woman haunted by those threats... couldn't get anyone to listen. until she shared those nightmarish letters with 4 on your side. here's investigator chris ramirez. kurt vukonich and alicia phillips began a relationship in a halfway house in 2009 that was destined for peril. we were both in a bad position, it was hard to meet people there. i wasn't from there, he seemed like a nice guy." both rebounding from rough patches in their lives.... alicia determined to move forward. kurt determined to hold her back. he choked me unconscious on three separate occasions. kurt was in and out of jail.... and his anger toward alicia only intensified.... it was a matter of him being a violent person and you came to the realization that this isn't somebody who you want in your life? That he was going to kill me. i came to the realization that he was going to kill me. He was going to choke me someday and not let go in time for me to live. He had hit me with a shovel and sent me flying across the yard. i knew i didn't want him in my life, but i didn't know how to get rid of him. He would not gong away. in 2012--relief came for alicia. kurt stole a vehicle and committed other felonies. he went to prison. for the first time in years, alicia felt safe in her hometown in farmington, while kurt was locked up across the state in hobbs. i'm grateful when he went to prison. but then you start getting these letters. He started saying that he was going to kill me. thanksgiving day... vengenance is mine and i shall pursue it with the conviction of a suicide bomber. For when this over, not a single day will pass for the rest of your life that you do not think of me. Love Always, Kurt. kurt is convinced that alicia stole money from him...fuel for his anger...just after valentines day he writes... you and i, we have unfinished business. i am easily 100 times more angry than i have ever been in my life. Not a fleeting anger, but one that has sustained for three years. I'm not bitter. I'm f***ing dangerous. kurt's tone only grows more threatening... "alicia, not even your death is enough for the pain you have caused me. See you soon, Love Kurt. on alicia's birthday ... "38 will be a year to remember. Take lots of pictures. You will cherish them later. See ya soon. Love Kurt." Do you think Kurt is capable of killing you or your family members? "yes, yes without a doubt in my mind." to make this situation much more pressing.... kurt vukonich is scheduled to be released from prison this september--it's an issue we needed to address with the new mexico department of corrections. we have received the letters in probation and parole and we are taking into account what is going on with those letters. How serious is the department of corrections taking this matter?" We're taking this matter very seriously. We feel that if someone is contacting a victim or threatening somebody, we need to take the action that we can take. That would mean placing him on the highest level of supervision and placing him on a gps monitor." once paroled, kurt will have to wear an ankle braclet. if he comes anywhere near the farmington area, an alarm will be sent to his parole officer and to local police. the warden of the prison in hobbs has opened an internal investigation. these letters may cause kurt to lose any good times credit he accumulated---pu shing back his release date. and once we started asking questions, state police opened a crimiinal investigation. If there ends up being a violation regarding any criminal matters that come up, we will swiftly deal with that." these threats don't sound empty.... I'll be home before i write again ...and no...I won't forget you. i know without a doubt in my mind he is capable. He's hurt people. He doesn't show emotion when he hurts people, He doesn't have any emotion at all when he hurts somebody. chris ramirez, 4 on your side. domestic violence is a real issue in our state. there is help available. we've posted some resources for you on k-o-b dot com. if you're interested in hearing more of chris's interview with alicia phillips-- or reading the letters for yourself-- that's

Video: Rio Arriba County sheriff breaks silence about scholarship f
the politically embattled sheriff of rio arriba county breaks a yearlong silence about his controversial practice of encouraging traffic violators to donate to a college scholarship fund instead of facing charges. it was a four-on-your-side investigation that led to the f-b-i seizing documents at the sheriff's office. tonight stuart dyson talks with sheriff tommy rodella about why he did it -- and what the future might bring. "first item of business - the scholarship fund was real - it's still in an account at valley national bank in espanola with 5,396 dollars in it -- not a cent has been awarded to any student -- including the law enforcement students at northern new mexico community college who were supposed to benefit from it." "Anytime that we're educating our children it's gotta be a good thing." sheriff tommy rodella says his efforts were sincere -- but some people didn't perceive it that way. "It seemed like a bribe - from the very beginning even when my dad told me over the phone before we even met with Rodella to me it was fishy and i let him know and he was like that doesn't sound right." "No comment from you guys again today? Jeez - it's 5 days we've tried to get comments from you guys" it didn't help when rodella dodged questions from our gadi schwartz -- but he says with the f-b-i demanding documents on the scholarship fund it wasn't time to talk then -- but it is now. "i fully expect that at some point we'll continue forward with this program - our efforts were and continue to be very genuine - very sincere." in fact rodella has a letter from the state administrative office of the courts telling him the decision to set up the scholarship option for traffic violators is up to the sheriff. rio arriba county is known nationally for its drug problem and rodella insists the scholarship fund is one way to fix it. " Law enforcement absolutely has to be one - there's got to be rehabilitation - there's gotta be counselling - there's gotta be social services - but on top of all that we need to make a better effort and that's the only thing this scholarship fund did." well it did more than that - it raised a cloud of suspicion that shrouds the sheriff's office in rio arriba to this day. rodella has fierce opposition in the democratic primary from james lujan -- a deputy he fired and former sheriff joe mascarenas -- who once held rodella's job. we'll know more about rodella's future after the june third primary election - back to you.

Video: State launches investigation into unlicensed ‘dentist’
unlicensed dentist in new mexico. we caught him willing to make a fake tooth for our undercover producer! well, state inspectors went knocking on his door. and we were there. 4 on your side investigator ryan luby first exposed the public health danger at 10 last night. and ryan, in these tough times.... some people are defending this guy? yes, some are, despite the fact the man was willing to break the law and has before. YVETTE WRITES: "He's working for a living! It's good for him and the people he's helping with no dental insurance because it's not affordable!" JENNIFER WRITES: "Screw the law. When you need dental care or health care your gonna do what you gotta do. Not all of us are rich okay..." TONIGHT, we're exploring that issue. we look at the discount dental options available that are actually safe and legal, and why state inspectors say curtis abeyta's business has to go. this time, we kept our distance from the pit bulls outside curtis abeyta's home. but we watched inspectors from new mexico's regulation and licensing department start their own investigation thanks to ours. mike unthank is the guy in charge of that department. he says abeyta could face a 4th degree felony, and could, if convicted, spend up to 18 months in jail and-or pay a fine up to five- thousand dollars! unthank says they take this case as seriously as the one in santa fe one year ago, when police booked a man for doing dental work in the back of his chevy, using tools from a tackle box. abeyta's dental practices have come up in court before-- --willie apodaca is in a custody battle with abeyta's girlfriend. way back in february, the girlfriend told a judge what abeyta does, after willie feared abeyta would try to treat his boys. given the confrontaiton willie watched on k-o-b monday night-- --he's worried again. mark moores, at new mexico's dental association, fears for people's health as well, and says abeyta does not have to be a treatment option. moores points to that list of organizations that offer free or discounted dental care for people who need it, people who ought to stay away from the pit bulls-- --off the back roads in chimayo. if you want to read about those other options, go to our website right now. the information is right here at the bottom of our original story. these are the organizations that strive to make dental care more affordable.
